What Are the Typical 2 Car Garage Dimensions?

The phrase "standard 2 car garage" stopped meaning much about fifteen years ago, because vehicles kept growing and the standard did not.

We size these for a living. This is what we have learned as garage builders across Central Maine, and it is the first conversation we have with homeowners in Augusta before anything gets drawn.

A 24x24 garage was generous in 1995. Today it is adequate for two crossovers and genuinely tight for two full-size trucks. Here are the real numbers so you can size yours against what you actually park.

The common 2 car garage dimensions

SizeInterior areaHonest assessment
20 x 20400 sq ftTwo small cars, nothing else. Rare in new construction.
22 x 22484 sq ftTwo mid-size vehicles, minimal storage
24 x 24576 sq ftThe most common build. Two crossovers comfortably.
24 x 28672 sq ftThe size most people should build
26 x 26676 sq ftExtra width for door swing and a bench
28 x 28784 sq ftTwo full-size trucks, storage, and room to work

Note that a "24x24" is measured to the outside of the framing. Interior width is closer to 23 feet. That foot matters more than you would think, and I will show you why.

Build in 4-foot increments

Before you settle on a number, know this: building materials come in 4-foot modules. Plywood and OSB sheets are 4x8. Studs come in 8, 12, and 16-foot lengths. Almost everything that goes into a wall or a roof is sized off that same grid.

When your dimensions divide evenly by 4, sheets land on studs and lengths run out clean. When they do not, you buy the same material anyway, cut it down, and throw the offcuts in the dumpster. You pay for the full sheet either way, and you pay a second time in the labor to cut it.

Our garage building cost guide puts dollar figures against those sizes, and how bay sizes work covers width and door height.

That is why 24 and 28 are efficient numbers and 22 and 26 are not.

Here is what that does to the price. A garage shell runs roughly $130 to $160 per square foot to build turnkey. Which end of that range you land on is not random. Efficient dimensions push you toward the bottom. Off-grid dimensions push you toward the top, because you are paying for material you throw away and labor to cut it.

Run the numbers and something surprising falls out:

SizeSquare feetWhere it lands in the rangeRoughly
22 x 22484High end, off the grid$77,400
24 x 24576Low end, on the grid$74,900
26 x 26676High end, off the grid$108,200
28 x 28784Low end, on the grid$101,900

Read those pairs again.

A 24x24 costs about the same as a 22x22. You get 92 more square feet for around $1,300, because the smaller building wastes what the larger one uses.

A 28x28 costs about the same as a 26x26. You get 108 more square feet for essentially nothing.

That is the single most useful thing on this page. If you are choosing between two sizes and one divides by 4, take the one that divides by 4. You are usually getting the extra space free.

Real vehicle dimensions

Length decides depth. Mirror width decides whether you can park two vehicles side by side and still open the doors. Almost nobody publishes the second number.

Ram 1500 Crew Cab19.4 ft81.2 innot published
Ford F-150 SuperCrew (6.5 ft box)20.3 ft79.9 in83.6 folded / 95.7 extended

Two notes on that table, because they change how you use it.

Most manufacturers do not publish mirror width. Toyota, Honda and Ram publish none at all. Where we have a number it comes from the manufacturer's own spec sheet, and where we do not, we have said so rather than guessing. If your vehicle is not listed with a mirror figure, measure it.

Tacoma width depends on trim. The base Double Cab is 76.9 inches, TRD Sport and Off-Road are 77.9, and TRD Pro and Trailhunter are 79.9. That is a three-inch spread on the same nameplate. Trim matters more than model.

Tow mirrors change everything. Ford's tow mirrors add over 10 inches per pair against standard mirrors. Two trucks with tow mirrors extended need close to 18 feet of clear width for the mirrors alone, before you add any gap between them. If you tow, plan around the tow mirrors, not the standard ones.

Height, if you are picking a door

VehicleHeight
Ford Expedition MAX78.0 in
Ford F-150 SuperCrew 4x2 (6.5 ft box)78.5 in
Ford F-250 Crew Cab79.0 to 81.6 in
Ford F-250 Tremor84.0 in

A 7-foot door leaves very little room over an F-250, and none once you add a roof rack, a light bar, or a cargo box. This is the argument for an 8 or 9-foot door.

The clearance you actually need

Parking two vehicles in a box is not the same as using them.

  • 36 inches between vehicles to open doors without contact. This is the figure design references converge on.
  • 30 inches from a vehicle to the wall on the outside.
  • 24 inches front and rear for walking past.
  • 4 feet between vehicles is the comfortable number, as opposed to the minimum.

Now do the arithmetic that decides your build.

Why 24x24 fails for two full-size trucks

Two Silverado crew cabs at 97.5 inches wide with mirrors extended:

  • Vehicle 1: 97.5 in
  • Gap between: 36 in
  • Vehicle 2: 97.5 in
  • Wall clearance, both sides: 60 in

That is 291 inches, or 24.25 feet of interior width. A nominal 24x24 gives you about 23 feet inside.

You are more than a foot short.

Fold both mirrors and you recover roughly two feet, which makes it work. But that means folding mirrors every single time you park, forever, and it means a passenger opening a door into a mirror the one time somebody forgot.

The fix is width, not depth. If you park two full-size trucks, build 26 feet wide or more.

For two crossovers, or one truck plus one crossover, 24 feet wide is genuinely fine.

Depth: 24 feet is the floor for a truck

An F-150 SuperCrew with the 6.5-foot box is 20.3 feet long. A 20-foot-deep garage cannot close its door behind it.

DepthWhat it handles
20 ftCars and small crossovers only
24 ftA full-size truck with inches to spare
28 ftA truck plus room to walk, store, and work

If you plow, none of these apply. Measure your truck with the plow mounted, because no plow manufacturer publishes how far the blade projects past the bumper.

What else lives in a Maine garage

This is the part national articles skip, and in Maine it is decisive. If your existing garage is already too tight for it, remodeling the garage you have is usually cheaper than starting over.

A Maine two-car garage is also seasonal storage. Add up what actually goes in one:

ItemRough footprint
Snowblower6 sq ft
Lawn tractor15 sq ft
Full set of snow tires on rims6 sq ft
Chest freezer8 sq ft
Workbench12 sq ft
Firewood, a week's worth stacked12 sq ft
Bicycles, kayaks, ladders25 sq ft

That is roughly 84 square feet of floor gone before a vehicle is parked. It is why so many 24x24 garages end up with one car outside by December.

If the garage is your only outbuilding, size for the storage and the vehicles, not just the vehicles.

One double door or two singles?

One 16 or 18 ft doorTwo 9 ft doors
CostUsually lowerUsually higher
StructureLong header span, more engineeringShorter spans, simpler
Heat lossOne large openingOpen only the side you need
ParkingEasier to center, more forgivingTighter, needs a center post

In Maine, two singles have a real winter advantage: you only open the half you are using, so you dump less heat and less snow blows in. Two singles also give you a center post to hang things on, which people underrate.

Stairs and lofts

If you want storage above, the stairs have to land somewhere.

A standard straight run eats roughly 40 square feet of floor. On a 24x24 that is seven percent of your garage gone.

Options that preserve floor space: put the stairs along an end wall outside the parking bays, use a landing to turn them into a corner, or add depth specifically to house them. Pull-down attic stairs cost nothing in floor space but make real storage impractical.

Decide this before framing. Retrofitting stairs means moving structure.

Approach and apron

You need room to swing in, especially with a truck.

Plan for at least 20 to 25 feet of clear approach in front of the doors, and more if you are coming in at an angle.

One Maine-specific note: on detached garages here, gravel commonly runs right to the garage door rather than a poured concrete apron. That is normal regional practice, it drains well, and it saves real money. Do not assume an apron is in your quote, and do not assume you need one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a 2 car garage? 24x24 is the most common build, giving about 576 square feet. It suits two crossovers or mid-size vehicles well. It is tight for two full-size trucks.

Will two full-size trucks fit in a 24x24 garage? Barely, and only with the mirrors folded. Two crew-cab trucks at about 97 inches wide with mirrors, plus 36 inches between them and wall clearance, need over 24 feet of interior width. A nominal 24x24 provides about 23 feet inside. Build 26 feet wide.

How much space do you need between two cars in a garage? About 36 inches to open doors without hitting the other vehicle, and roughly 30 inches from a vehicle to the wall. Four feet between vehicles is comfortable rather than minimum.

How deep should a 2 car garage be? Twenty-four feet is the minimum for a full-size truck, and it is snug. Twenty-eight feet is the depth most people are happier with, because it leaves room to walk around the vehicles and store seasonal equipment.

Is one big garage door or two smaller doors better? Two singles cost a little more but let you open only the side you need, which matters in a Maine winter, and give you a center post for storage. One wide door is cheaper and more forgiving to park through, but needs a longer structural header.

Do I need a concrete apron in front of my garage? Not necessarily. On detached garages in Maine it is common for gravel to run right to the door. It drains well and saves money. Check what is actually included in your quote.
